China Education Symposium and its 2014 Annual Conference

哈佛大学中国教育论坛是哈佛大学研究生院的学生组织。其宗旨在连接青年教育实践者、学者、政策制定者以及各界人士,促进与中国教育相关的讨论,以及支持教育实践。目前论坛有海内外会员近千人,拥有自己的会刊,通过线上和线下两种平台开展例常活动。

China Education Symposium is a student organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. We strive to promote conversations on education in China and to support education initiatives aimed at improving China’s education. China Education Symposium currently has more than 400 members made up of scholars, policy makers, business leaders and students interested in improving China’s education.

哈佛中国教育论坛年会每年5月在哈佛大学召开,每次均邀请中美知名学者及实践者展示成果、交流观点。2012年年会以“教育创新”为主题,2013年年会以“国际化时代的中国教育改革”为主题,参与人数均超过200人。哈佛中国教育论坛以往的嘉宾包括往届嘉宾包括人大附中副校长周建华、西交利物浦大学执行校长席酉民、哈佛肯尼迪政府学院HAUSER非盈利组织研究中心中国项目主任胡馨、“多元智能理论”的创始人哈佛大学Howard Gardner教授,哈佛大学国际与比较教育教授Fernando Reimers等。Harvard SEED,美丽中国行动,立人图书馆,阳光书屋等在内的青年教育实践项目也参与交流。

The China Education Symposium Annual Conference is held in May. The theme of the Conference is to discuss issues related to the education in China. As China has unequivocally developed its economic prowess in recent decades, its education has not kept up. Major issues in education are becoming more than ever sources of disenchantment and dissatisfaction. The theme of the 2013 China Education Symposium Conference was China’s Education Reform in the Globalized World. Distinguished guest speakers from academia, government, the non-profit sector and the business world convened in Cambridge for two days to share their insights on China’s education reform in the new age of globalization with more than 200 attendees from Harvard and the Boston area. Past speakers at the China Education Symposium included Professor Howard Gardner, Professor Fernando Reimers, presenters from Teach for China, Harvard China SEED, and Sunshine Library, etc…

哈佛中国教育论坛2014年会将于5月2日(周五)- 3日(周六)在哈佛大学(美国马萨诸塞州剑桥市)举行。今年年会的主题是国际化视野下的中国教育与领导力。主题涵盖高等教育、基础教育、教育创新与企业家精神、教育公平等内容。哈佛商学院知名教授William Kirby将作主题演讲,探讨中国的高等教育与领导力问题。来自国内外的知名学者、政策制定者和企业家将就中国教育面临的热点问题进行讨论。

The theme of the 2014 Annual Conference is Can China Lead? Education and Leadership in the Globalized World. Professor William Kirby from Harvard University will deliver a keynote speech on China’s higher education and leadership. Distinguished scholars, policy makers and entrepreneurs will also share their insights from the perspectives of higher education, basic education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and better education for all.

By Mar 2014, there are over 20K schools, around 100K teachers and 6M registered students using 17zuoye in China.

Little Angel Action Fund (LAA) was established in Beijing in 2008, under China Youth Development Foundation. A-Action Youth Action for Change is a project that empowers Chinese youth to initiate their community projects to make a difference by providing them with guidance and funds. We believe that youth are not the leader of tomorrow; they are the leader today. Up to April 2014, A-Action had supported 241 projects in which about 1,000 students participated in various cities in China.

Global Peer Support (GPS) in China is a global community that relies on different modes of interactions to guide Chinese adolescents towards mental wellness and empowerment during their formative high school years. Our project will be amongst the pioneers in the nation that promote such elaborative collaboration between high school students and experienced young adults. Our web-based service platform matches well-trained university students to provide tailored high quality mentorship to high-school students who are in need of guidance and support. Such a connection and one-on-one mentorship, we believe, can help address uncomfortable issues or problems that may not be shared with teachers or parents, and therefore contribute to the holistic well being of the adolescents. We are currently at the piloting phase, and we look forward to having new talents join us!

Children’s Cooperation Center supports to develop children’s all-around capability and personality, including confidence, cooperation, communication, empathy and creativity. The Children’s Cooperation Center was developed as a corrective to the narrow emphasis placed on examination results. We used tested methods that allow children to obtain a more balanced education, with special attention given to character building. These methods depend on cooperative relationships among various social groups who jointly share the responsibility of providing our children with a broader education, by efficiently using the resources of the few to provide for the many. These groups include parents, schools, students and others who can teach our children valuable lessons, share resources and experiences, provide psychological support, and create social awareness in a social awareness in a broader setting.

5E Summer Camp, an exchange program that embodies AIC’s commitment to education equality and belief in the lasting social impacts of youth empowerment, was launched by AIC Education in 2011. The 5E Summer Camp is thus named for its core values of equality, exchange, enrichment, environment, and empowerment. Each year AIC Education provides 5-7 local campers scholarship, which is about 2000 RMB, to cover their study and daily expense.

  • Zuxi She is a Master’s candidate at Harvard Graduate School of Education and his research focus is in liberal arts education. Before coming here, He taught art history in China for 3 years. Zuxi received his Bachelor’s degree at Sorbonne University in France and a Master’s degree at the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom.

James Liao
  • James Liao is a User Experience Consultant and Developer at Microsoft with customers in the US and across the Asia region. For over 7 years,  he has also worked with Chinese rural teachers and migrant children developing IT solutions for rural libraries, schools, NGOs, and teaching them the power of technology in the classroom as well as different learning methodologies.

Joycelyn Eby
  • Joycelyn Eby is an Ed.M. student in the International Education Policy program at HGSE. She spent three years in Beijing working for Junior Achievement China and Beijing Normal University. A native of Seattle, Washington, she received undergraduate degrees in East Asian Studies and Bassoon Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory.
